Keep chickens courtesy of an Eglu

I love eggs and use them widely in my diet – they’re my favourite fast food. However I am concerned about the welfare of the chickens who provide them and always buy free range eggs. I’m not so naïve as to think that all free range chickens are equal though and often wonder just how free they really are.

Years ago I lived near a small holding where the chickens really were free range and I felt very happy buying directly from the owner. The eggs were much nicer than shop bought ones as well.

The only way of course to be sure that your eggs are truly from free and happy hens, is to keep your own. Yes – really!

Even if you live in a city, chickens can be kept quite easily and don’t make a noise – it’s the cockerels that cause all the furore with the neighbours with their early morning crowing.

To help you make the decision to keep chickens easier, a fantastic new product has been produced called the Eglu. It’s a moulded plastic cage which is really easy to clean, fox and vermin proof and is sold complete with two chickens.

This novel and unique idea has been a huge success in the UK and is also available in the US. Urban chickens are the new pet-of-choice! Hens make great pets being friendly and happy to be petted by adults and children alike. They are ‘green’ because they help recycling efforts by eating kitchen scraps in an addition to the proper pellets needed for healthy birds and tasty eggs. Their manure is good for the garden as well.

An Eglu comes in a choice of vibrant colours with attached wire mesh run, sunshade and food hoppers. Everything is designed to be easy to use and easy to clean.

Just imagine the fun of popping into the garden to get an egg fresh from the hen to have for breakfast!
