Apple burgers
Apple burgers? Yes, apples are very tasty in savoury dishes and well worth making as a variation from the bought meaty-style burger mixes. Take them along to a barbecue and ask for them to be cooked for you. Everyone will want to taste them so make sure you bring lots.
Serves 4 (1 burger each)
Ingredients
2 cooking apples, grated
1 ½ large onions very finely chopped (use food processor)
2 c bread crumbs
1 green pepper, seeded and chopped
1 tsp fresh ginger, minced
2 c brown or white rice, cooked (leftover is fine)
6 tsp ground rolled oats
½ tsp salt
black pepper to taste
Vegetable oil for frying
Method
Place apples in bowl with onions, bread crumbs, green pepper, ginger, rice, 3 tsps oats, salt, and pepper.
Mix well.
Heat the oil in the frying pan, over medium heat.
Shape mixture into four burgers shapes, adding more bread crumbs if necessary.
Coat with remaining 3 tsps of oats.
Fry in oil over medium heat until golden brown, 2-3 minutes per side.
These are nice in a bun or served with vegetables and gravy.
